Hair for Hope 2010 Date Announced

July 20th, 2010 by Lorrie Walker in Blog, Hair, Special Event

Hair for Hope 2 The Lakeland hair salon of Michael Rose Hair Designs has announced the date of the salon’s second annual Hair for Hope, a “hairoic” cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer.

This year’s event is Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, 5:30-8 p.m. at the salon located at 3139 S. Florida Ave. in Lakeland. The salon is in the Scottsdale Plaza and is directly across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts.

Men, women and children are invited to donate their hair during the event- like this mother and daughter did last year! All participants get a free basic haircut, and hair collected during the event will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages people to grow, cut and share their hair to make no-cost, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.

Those who donate their hair also will receive a coupon for $5 off their next haircut at Michael Rose Hair Designs.

Hair Donation Requirements

To make the most beautiful, realistic wigs, donated hair must meet the following requirements:

  • Donated hair must be at least 8 inches long when measured from just above the
elastic band of the ponytail to the ends.
  • Wavy/curly hair is fine, and it can be straightened to measure.
  • Hair should be freshly washed, completely dry and free of any styling products.
  • Hair cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated, but it can be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes.
  • Hair can not be more than 5 percent gray.
Hereʼs why: Gray hair and some chemically-treated or permanent-colored hair does not absorb dye at the same rate as other types of hair. It is more difficult to color and once it is colored, it fades more quickly.

At least six ponytails are needed to create a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig. Generally, each wig comes from a different person and is a different color. Although some hair colors may look alike, including gray hair, each is completely unique. To create a realistic wig that has the same color throughout, ponytails donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths are processed and dyed to the same shade. Each ponytail must be able to absorb dyes at the same rate to make wigs that are consistent and natural-looking in color.

Most hair colored with permanent dyes is too fragile and breakable once it is re-colored and processed under the rigorous conditions required to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths appreciates the sacrifice required of hair donors and only accepts hair it knows can be used for its intended purposes. All wigs made by Pantene Beautiful Lengths are distributed via American Cancer Society wig banks throughout the country free of charge to the women who need them.

Hair for Hope also features a vendor area, and vendors interested in having a free display during the event are welcome.
