Hair for Hope: A cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer.

October 2nd, 2009 by admin in Blog, Special Event

We are looking for men, women and children willing to cut their hair during Hair for Hope, a “hairoic” cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer. The event is Thursday, Nov. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Michael Rose Hair Designs.

Participants will receive a free basic haircut and all hair collected during the event will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages people to grow, cut and share their hair to make no-cost, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.

People who donate their hair also will receive a coupon for $5 off their next haircut at Michael Rose Hair Designs.

There will be complimentary refreshments and live music. Mrs. Lakeland America and Mrs. Florida America will be on-hand for photo opportunities and autographs.

For more information or to sign up to donate your hair, call Lorrie Walker

Hair Donation Requirements

To make the most beautiful, realistic wigs, donated hair must meet the following requirements:

  • Donated hair must be at least 8 inches long when measured from just above the
elastic band of the ponytail to the ends.
  • Wavy/curly hair is fine, and it can be straightened to measure.
  • Hair should be freshly washed, completely dry and free of any styling products.
  • Hair cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated, but it can be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes.
  • Hair can not be more than 5 percent gray.
    Hereʼs why:
  • Gray hair and some chemically-treated or permanent-colored hair, does not absorb dye at the same rate as other types of hair. It is more difficult to color and once it is colored, it fades more quickly.

It takes at least six ponytails to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig. Generally, each wig comes from a different person and is a different color. Even though some hair colors may look similar, including gray hair, each is completely unique. To create a realistic wig that has the same color throughout, ponytails donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths are processed and dyed to the same shade. Each ponytail must be able to absorb dyes at the same rate to make wigs that are a consistent and natural-looking color.

Most hair colored with permanent dyes is too fragile and breakable once it is re-colored and processed under the rigorous conditions required to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths appreciates the sacrifice required of hair donors and only accepts hair it knows can be used for its intended purposes. All wigs made by Pantene Beautiful Lengths are distributed through American Cancer Society wig banks throughout the country at no charge to the women who need them.

*Update- The Hair for Hope event is growing by the day, as vendors are signing on to set up informational booths on health and wellness during the event. This means that now there is something for everyone- even those who don’t plan to cut and donate their hair. Businesses who will be at the event giving out coupons and freebies include: Vitamin World, Smoothie King, Gold’s Gym, Broadway Studio Photography, Broadway Dance Theatre, Sun n’ Fun, Curves, Lakeland Music Center, Jackson Hewitt and Full Cover Insurance Solutions.

So please come out and bring your friends.
