Hair Trends for the Fall, Winter and the Upcoming Holidays

October 29th, 2009 by Lorrie Walker in Blog, Hair

The holidays are fast approaching and with them come lots of opportunities to dress up for parties and events.

Trying a new hairstyle or cut is great around the holidays because it gives people a chance to try something different that they normally may not do, says Michael Rose, who owns Michael Rose Hair Designs, a Lakeland hair salon.

Following are the cuts, styles and trends for various lengths of hair for winter and the holiday season.

Long Hair
• Curls are all the rage this year and big hair is coming back in a big way. Get out those hot rollers and big curling irons!
• Updos- Whether it’s a New Year’s bash or a small dinner party, you can’t go wrong with a classy updo.

Medium Hair
• Swing cuts, layered bobs or inverted bobs; no matter what you call them, they are popular right now.
• The “shattered” look. This involves blunt, choppy, uneven layers that swing in the wind and move with your body. It’s a very unstructured, edgy look.

Short Hair
• The shattered look also is great for short hair this season.
• The vertical shag, also known as “wildfire” or “Chicago.” This style creates a lot of fringe and short layers. It’s punky on the top with long bangs. A bold, feminine touch.

Color Trends
• Mochas and caramels are extremely popular highlight colors for fall and winter because of their warm, golden coffee-like tones. A new line of mochas introduced at the salon are subtle, soft and pretty for brunettes and light blondes.
• For dark blondes, soft blonde or beige highlights are in. This is called an “angelized” or sun-kissed look. Very fine strands of highlighted hair give it more body and create a subtle look. These highlights also are very low maintenance.
• For redheads, golden tones, copper tones or more vibrant reds are in this season.

Hair Extensions
• For blondes, the trend is to add medium or chocolate brown underneath in the back.
• When it comes to brunettes, adding blonde and red throughout the hair to give a contemporary look is a popular trend.

If you’re interested in a new style for the holidays or want your hair done for a special event, it’s time to start planning ahead, Rose said.

“Just as the stores start to get crowded as the holidays approach, the hair salons start filling their appointment books,” he said. “If you know the dates of upcoming parties and events, we recommend calling now and setting an appointment.”
