Lakeland Hair Salon Offers Zumba Classes

Going to a hair salon doesn’t have to be only about making improvements in the hair and makeup department.

For those who drop by Michael Rose Hair Designs on Monday and Friday afternoons, it can be about making some physical improvements, as well.

Rose has opened his salon for Zumba classes on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Fridays at 7 p.m. taught by Mikey Jiminez, a certified Zumba instructor. The classes are limited to six people, so it’s important to call ahead and get your name on the list, said Michael Rose, the Lakeland hair salon owner.

Zumba is a form of dance exercise created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. It incorporates Latin and international music with dance.

“It’s a fun, easy way to lose weight,” Rose said.

Attending an exercise class at a hair salon may seem out of the ordinary to some, but not for Rose.

“People come to the salon and talk about beauty, clothes and makeup,” he said. “They also talk about body image and how they want to improve themselves. We provide an avenue to make improvements in the beauty and makeup arena, so it makes sense for us to provide an outlet for women to improve body image, too.”

The salon’s small, intimate setting gives people a chance to come to a place where they feel comfortable and won’t have people gawking at them, he said.

The cost is $5 per class.

Remember that space is limited, so it’s important to call ahead: (863) 648-1326.
