When the contestants hit the stage for the Mrs. Florida America Pageant on May 16 at Westgate Resorts in Orlando, several of them will be sporting hairstyles and makeup by Lakeland hair stylist Michael Rose.

Contestants that Rose has coached this year include:

- Mrs. Ocala
- Mrs. Dr. Phillips
- Mrs. Tampa
- Mrs. Apopka
- Mrs. Kissimmee
- Mrs. Deland
- Mrs. Winter Park

Over the past several weeks, Rose has hosted seminars on hair and makeup for the contestants and offered insight as to what the judges expect from the next Mrs. Florida America as a role model. The Mrs. Florida winner will go on to compete for the Mrs. America title.

“It’s not all about having the $5,000 gown and people critiquing and working on you, it’s how you present yourself to the judges,” Rose said. “Appearance means something, but it doesn’t take the place of substance.”

Rose recalls the year Miss Teen Vermont won in a $39.99 Wal-Mart gown and went on to become Miss Teen USA.

Michael Rose Hair Designs is the official salon to the Mrs. Florida pageant. This year’s winner will receive a beauty package valued at about $10,000 that includes hair care and styling for various public appearances and a variety of styling products.

Rose, a Lakeland pageant stylist, is a certified pageant judge who entered the pageant industry in 1975. His certification is through the judging school of Barbara Kelley, an internationally known pageant expert.

He assists pageant contestants of all ages in preparing for competition in on-stage presentation, wardrobe, interviewing and hair and makeup styles that will bring out each individual contestant’s best facial features.

Mrs. Ocala America Teresa Hyatt said recently that Rose has been a tremendous help to her in her pageant preparation. She met Rose several years ago, just after her mother died of breast cancer. He was doing hair at the Mrs. Florida America Pageant and Hyatt was a contestant.Hyatt BW photo

“It was like he was sent to me to be a part of my family’s life, and we love him dearly,” Hyatt said. “He inspires me to be the best I can be and he is always positive and supportive.”

Hyatt said Rose’s best advice has been a reminder to be herself.

“He tells me I am beautiful inside and out, and to just let the judges see me for who I really am,” she said. “He also reminds me that I am only competing against myself.”

Rose has helped Hyatt mentally prepare for this year’s pageant and also helps in the selection of her wardrobe and hairstyle.

“I could go on and on about how wonderful and helpful he has been to me,” she said. “He is truly an amazing man and it is a true honor to call him a friend for life.”

Rose, a Rhode Island native, has coached women in pageants throughout the northeast. He has continued his coaching services since moving to Lakeland, FL in 2007.
