Lakeland hair salon Michael Rose Hair Designs hosted their third annual charity cut-a-thon Oct. 13 to collect ponytail donations for breast cancer awareness.

Women and men alike donated more than 30 ponytails. The ponytails were sent to Pantene Beautiful Lengths who gives wigs to the American Cancer Society, which distributes them to cancer patients free of charge.

Stylist Christina Rodgers evens out Larocca’s hair post-donation. At 10 years old, this is not Larocca’s first hair donation. Many participants had personal reasons why they wanted to donate; others just wanted to support a good cause.

Mother-daughter duo Angela and Amie Aguilera wanted to donate their hair to support children with cancer. “My daughter didn’t want to cut her hair alone, so I did it with her,” Aguilera said.

Participants young and old came to donate their hair. “I think everyone knows someone or is related to someone who has been affected by cancer. I just hope this helps,” hair donor Jan Woods said.

Sole male participant Jonathan Workman decided it was time to cut off his long hair.

Workman heard about the event on Bay News 9 and opted to support the cancer awareness efforts.

Southeastern University student Sara Holcomb is no stranger to hair donation. Holcomb has donated her hair 11 times, moved to do so in honor of her grandmother.

“I want to make a difference in someone’s life,” Holcomb said.

“I didn’t want to cut my hair just to cut it,” SEU student Tabitha Ingram said. “I’ve donated before and I thought it was a good cause to donate to again.”

Jennifer Dunifon had also been contemplating a hair cut for some time. “I work in a hospital and it’s a huge pain to pin it up for surgery all the time,” Dunifon said.

“I think it would be great if someone could get some use out of my hair,” Dunifon said.

Emily Bos always wanted to cut her long hair, but was too afraid.

The SEU student finally decided to make the cut in remembrance of her friend’s mother’s death.

Yaime Ruiz chopped her locks in lieu of her daughter Leana. “She’d been waiting for a long time to cut her hair,” Ruiz said. “She was scared when she found out how short her hair was going to be so I cut mine instead.”

Pageant queens Mrs. America and Mrs. Galaxy International came to show their support for the event with their daughters.

Mrs. Galaxy International, Kellie Lightbourn stopped to take pictures with the girls in the salon, and offered advice on how pageants help instill confidence.

The extensions, which are available at Rose’s salon throughout October, are made with real hair and cost $15 each. He will donate all proceeds from the promotion to the American Cancer Society.

“This is a great way to give to a cause that is dear to my heart and at the same time bring awareness to the issue,” Rose said. “Ultimately, I would love to see pink hair all over Lakeland as a show of solidarity and support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We also are using the promotion to bring attention to our annual charity cut-a-thon, Hair for Hope.”

Since 2009, the Lakeland salon has hosted Hair for Hope, a “hairoic” cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer. This year’s event is Thursday, Oct. 13, 5:30-8 p.m. and is open to the public. Participants are needed to cut at least 8 inches of their hair, which will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and used to make wigs that are distributed free through American Cancer Society wig banks nationwide to women undergoing cancer treatment.

In addition to a free basic hair-cut, participants will receive $5 off their next visit at Michael Rose  Hair Designs.

Lufriu, a Tampa resident, was crowned Mrs. America in February, and is the national spokeswoman for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and the Tampa Bay Chapter president.

Lightbourn was crowned in August. This isn’t her first time attending the annual Hair for Hope event. She was in attendance last year, when she held the title of Mrs. Florida America 2010.

This also isn’t Lightbourn’s first exposure to charity cut-a-thons. While she held the title of Miss Virginia USA 1999, Lightbourn cut off 13 inches of her auburn locks so a wig could be made for a 12-year-old girl who suffered from alopecia areata, as disease that causes hair loss and has no cure.

“I’m thrilled to have these two beautiful, talented women attend the event,” Rose says. “They have such a heart for their communities.”

Hair for Hope is 5:30-8 p.m. and is free to the public.

The Lakeland hair salon recently introduced Creative Nail Design’s Shellac manicures to its repertoire of services, says hair stylist Alison Wishart.

Shellac Nail Polish promises its consumers the perfect manicure or pedicure for two weeks- no chipping or smudges.
When Creative Nail Design, more commonly known as CND, collaborated with chemists, they found a unique, ultraviolet ray-activated formula guaranteeing buyers a smudge-proof manicure or pedicure.

If you’re pondering buying the Shellac polish and treating yourself to a DIY manicure, think again. CND only sells Shellac nail polishes to licensed professionals, due to the intricacies of the application process and special materials used.

The cost of a Shellac manicure can run between $30 and $40, roughly twice the cost of a basic manicure. Alison, the Shellac nails manicurist at Michael Rose Hair Designs, offers Shellac manicures for $20-$25.

“Our clients were so excited to hear we were now offering Shellac manicures and at such a good price,” Alison says.
The manicure takes approximately 30 minutes. Experts recommend refraining from a Shellac manicure if nails are splitting, cracking or peeling.

According to CND, the process consists of two parts: preparation and application.

To prepare nails for the Shellac polish, manicurists begin by conducting a dry manicure. CND recommends pushing back cuticles and scrubbing away all impurities.

During the application process, the manicurist applies a special Shellac base coat and then applies the Shellac color polish. The Shellac color polish usually requires a couple of coats and, in between coats, the polish is cured by a unique CND ultraviolet lamp. Finally, manicurists remove the top film with 99 percent Isopropyl alcohol and then rub solar oil to give nails an unbeatable shine.

Jeanette Lee- a professional billiards player known as The Black Widow- was the featured guest at the event, and Michael made sure she looked her best by styling her hair prior to the evening’s festivities.

“I had an excellent palette to work with,” Michael said. “Jeanette is beautiful.”

The Gala attracted approximately 500 attendees from the community including Baseball Hall of Fame Members, members of the Tigers organization, community leaders, supporters and Lee, the event’s special guest. 

The Gala was an intimate and formal event that boasted fantastic cuisine, libations and celebrity entertainment at Lake Mirror Center, which was transformed into a Vegas-style setting for the evening, said Alice Badcock, who chaired the Tigers Diamond Gala. 

Lee played billiards with a variety of sponsors, and also did an exhibition that night.

“It was fantastic,” Michael said. “I was happy to be a part of it.”

Michael Rose Hair Designs will host a Glamour Night at the salon Dec. 6, from 6-8 p.m.

This is your chance to try the latest in BeautiControl makeup and skin care products and to get your glam look for the holiday season and all of the parties and other festivities that go along with it.

This event is open to the public. Cost is just $5, and proceeds go to Women Helping Others, the charity organization of BeautiControl. Everyone who attends Glam Night is entered into a drawing to win a glam set valued at $100.
