Say Goodbye to Brassy- Looking Hair

Whether you dye your hair blonde, you’re a natural blonde, or you have gray hair, you’re probably familiar with the problem; blonde and gray hair colors are prone to fading out and turning an unwanted yellow or brassy shade with time.

Brassy hair color can be the result of improper hair coloring. If you have dark hair and decide to lighten it, make sure you leave the color in your hair for just the right amount of time. If you remove the hair color too soon, you can end up with orange-looking hair.

Both gray and blonde hair are extremely susceptible to environmental factors like the sun, and the iron and chlorine that are found in water. Use a clarifying shampoo to get chlorine out of your hair, or choose a water filter that will take those unwanted chemicals out of your water.

And what’s the best way to repair your hair color and avoid the dull look? The answer is quite simple. All it takes is a little knowledge of the color wheel.

A blue or purple toner can restore your hair color, while a violet or blue shampoo will help you get the yellow or brassy tones out.

There’s no need to worry; the shampoo’s purple pigments will not dye your hair purple or blue, but because it is opposite to yellow on the color wheel, a purple shampoo will counteract yellow tones.

Lakeland hair stylist Michael Rose recommends using Clairol’s Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner. Another option is using a violet shampoo like L’oreal’s White Violet Shampoo once or twice a week, depending on your individual blonde or gray and environmental factors that affect you area.

We understand if you prefer a brand name,  but if you’d rather save a few dollars, consider the generic version of Shimmer Lights, which is available at Sally Beauty Supplies.

Also, keep in mind that coloring your hair is a chemical process and if you want to ensure you get the best results leave the job to a professional colorist at a salon.
